As believers, we cherish and love the mercy of God. It is precious to us, as it has been to saints throughout the ages. Not all, however, have delighted in God’s mercy. In the Old Testament, we read that one of God’s own prophets, Jonah, refused to obey God’s command to call the people of Nineveh to repentance because he did not want God’s unrelenting mercy and grace to extend to such a wicked people. Despite Jonah’s efforts to circumvent God’s plan, we see God’s mercy triumph as an entire city repents. One of the great lessons of this Old Testament narrative is that, by His mercy, God will accomplish His saving purpose and we as His servants get to be a part of that gospel mission.
